In amongst our remodeling… we had some major excitement…there has been a lot of forest around us cut down by new logging companies and so the poor animals are being displaced, and there have been a lot of bears around lately and we had a big male in our yard recently, and also a momma bear and 2 cubs.

Well, Daize, our rescue boxer that we adopted… well, she loves us soo much and we love her, she is such a little monkey and has a sassy personality.. she had become protective of us and Daniel was walking out our front steps with the dogs to take them out for a walk and Daize, the 8 year old rescue boxer went out on our front porch and down the steps and there was a bear there. Neela our 3 year old boxer saw it and dissapeared, and as Daniel was right behind Daize she started barking at it and it attacked her ( in defense ) and grabbed her and daniel was yelling for the bear to let go.

I heard him and ran out and started focusing for it to let go and it wouldn’t so then I started just screaming with the intense message to let her go steady non stop, and he finally released her and then he charged up the steps to where daniel and I were.

We ran in the front door and slammed the door in his face, ( Daize was still out there in shock, but standing, then we opened the door right away again and the bear went after Daize again and we started yelling again and calling Daize, she managed to run around him and up the steps and we got her in and ran to the back of the house to open the back door to call Neela who had disappeared into thin air, we ran to the front door again and she came running in just fine, with big eyes… saying wow, did you see that ?   The Bear

Daize had 3 large holes in her left shoulder/back area, and one under her left front leg, it was a miracle he didn’t bite her right front leg off… I phoned the vet, and there are new policies here and you have to drive 30 miles away for emergencies now, so Daniel said well, can’t you stitch her up ???

So I did my first stitching job, pulling the thread out of the sewing machine in my haste and I left wide spaces between the stitches as I instinctively knew it would need to drain, but I didn’t know much else… like disinfecting the thread :)

Anyway I tried to clean it a bit, but am afraid I didn’t do a very good job of it, as I felt it when it hurt her..so I put some herbal salve in the wounds, after cutting the fur away from them, stitched her up and took her to the vet the next morning for antibiotics.

He said I did a pretty good stitch job and that it was good I left open areas for it to drain.

There is a time for herbs and a time for antibiotics and this was definitely a time for antibiotics because Bears mouths have so much bacteria.  And sure enough it drained and drained… tons of fluid for over a week.

She was pretty sore, but it healed just fine. So now we have bear bangers all around the house , just in case, and we look outside the door before we just go running out, and Daize too… its funny to see… when we open the door everyone peeks out before they go outside… we don’t want to startle any more Bears.

Afterward I had a talk with the Bear and he said he didn’t mean to do that.. he thought he was being attacked and was scared.. I thanked him for not killing her or biting her leg off… and I told him we will try to be careful coming out of the house.. and he said he will try to stay out of the yard.

So… another exciting story and another exciting year !!
